Why We Built Camera Control Into Reverie Before Generation

Most AI video tools skip shot decisions entirely. We didn't — because framing carries meaning.

Most AI video tools work the same way: you describe a scene, hit generate, and the model picks the shot for you. Wide, close-up, handheld, static — the algorithm makes the call, usually landing on a flat medium shot that could fit any scene in any film. You never had a choice. The tool decided by default, and most people never notice the choice was taken from them.

We built Reverie differently. Camera control isn't a filter applied after generation. It's a decision you make before the model renders anything.

Why Shot Choice Matters

A director frames a shot on purpose. That's not overthinking it — it's filmmaking. Distance signals isolation. A close-up reads as intimacy or threat. A wide shot places a character in their world. Handheld movement creates urgency; static framing builds dread. Framing carries meaning.

When you take that decision away from the creator, every scene reads the same regardless of what's actually happening in it. A tense confrontation looks like a casual conversation. A lonely moment in a crowd looks like any other crowd scene. The tool isn't saving you time — it's making the decision for you, badly.

How We're Doing It Different

In Reverie, camera control lives before generation, not after. You set your shot before the model renders:

  • Wide shot — establish geography and context
  • Close-up — isolate emotion and reaction
  • Tracking shot — follow motion with intention
  • Handheld — inject energy and immediacy
  • Static — hold stillness and control

The model renders that framing instead of guessing one. It's one more control to learn before you can just start generating. That's a real tradeoff.

The Tradeoff We're Willing to Make

We know this adds friction. One more setting to understand. One more decision before you hit generate. We could hide it, bury it, make it "optional." It would be easier.

But a tool that hides the decision isn't serving you. It's serving the user who wants any shot any way, fast. That's not you if you care about your film.

If you're making something worth watching, your shot choices should be your choices. Not the model's defaults. Not the algorithm's bias toward safety and simplicity.

What's Next

We're not stopping here. We're working toward more granular controls — lens choice, depth of field, movement curves. Every parameter a filmmaker would actually care about. Not gimmicks. Real tools.

Building in public means shipping what works, explaining why we ship it, and listening when we get it wrong. This is how we build.
